FIRE DEPARTMENT NEW INCIDENT RESPONSE UNIT

In April 2022, Kerry Airport made a groundbreaking move towards sustainability by introducing a fully electric Incident Response Unit (IRU) to its fire department. This vehicle is part of an ambitious project to convert Kerry Airport’s entire fleet to zero emissions, an initiative made possible through a multi-million-euro agreement with Holden Plant Rentals, known for supplying specialized fleets to government and municipal bodies across Ireland. This IRU—a modified, all-electric Mercedes designed specifically for first responder duties—supports rapid response for airport incidents while producing no emissions, thereby reducing the airport’s carbon footprint significantly.

This initiative is part of Kerry Airport’s alignment with national and EU goals to enhance sustainability within the aviation sector. The Irish government, through its Regional Airports Programme, allocated funding to Kerry Airport to encourage green projects, like the acquisition of electric equipment and vehicles. This funding has enabled the airport to add not only the IRU but also other electric vehicles crucial for airport operations, including airfield patrol units and electric towing vehicles. These tools will be instrumental in helping Kerry Airport transition towards full carbon neutrality and in setting a standard for other regional airports across Ireland.

Holden Plant Rentals has played a vital role in this project. With extensive experience in providing fleets for semi-state bodies, councils, and emergency services, Holden was an ideal partner for Kerry Airport’s ambitious sustainability goals. Known for its commitment to high-quality service and adherence to strict environmental standards, Holden has a track record of adapting vehicles to the unique needs of clients. In this case, their modifications of the electric Mercedes vehicles to meet first responder standards demonstrate the company’s capacity to deliver specialized solutions.

Kerry Airport’s new IRU and other electric vehicles contribute to broader environmental benefits beyond just operational efficiency. By choosing electric vehicles, the airport significantly reduces its reliance on fossil fuels, which decreases emissions and noise pollution, ultimately enhancing the surrounding environment for both local communities and wildlife. This fleet upgrade underscores the airport’s long-term commitment to environmentally friendly practices, as part of a strategic approach to create a more sustainable future for regional aviation in Ireland.
